January Catfish Processing Down, Feed Deliveries Up

US - The latest figures from the USDA shows that catfish processing for January 2012 fell 26 per cent from the previous year but catfish feed deliveries were up 420 per cent.

Farm-raised catfish processed during January 2012 totaled 25.8 million pounds round weight, down 26 per cent from January 2011. The average price paid to producers was $1.25 per pound for January 2012, down 0.3 cent from last month but 31.7 cents above a year ago, according to the latest USDA figures.

Farm-raised catfish processed during 2011 totaled 334 million pounds, 29 per cent below the 472 million pounds processed in 2010. The average price paid to producers in 2011 was $1.17 per pound, 37 cents above the 80.1 cents paid last year.

The USDA also reports that total catfish feed delivered in the United States during January 2012 was 5,834 tons, up 420 per cent from January 2011, and up 47 per cent from the previous month.

Foodsize catfish feed delivered totaled 5,658 tons, up 441 per cent from the corresponding month a year ago. Feed delivered for fingerlings and broodfish totaled 176 tons, up 132 per cent from the corresponding month a year ago.
