The British people were in broad agreement on fish species, with almost twice as many people preferring Cod (50 per cent) to Haddock (27 per cent).
However, there was less agreement on the preferred sauce, as tartare sauce passed ketchup with a lead of less than one per cent.
In the South and North East of England, the West Midlands, Scotland and Wales ketchup that topped the list with narrow wins.
Wales is also the area of the UK most partial to gravy on their Fish and Chips, with 1 in 10 preferring it, compared to 1 in 100 in Scotland.
In the survey, consumers created their favourite plate by choosing which species they prefer, their favourite accompaniments and what kind of sauce they like to add to the plate.
The nation’s favourite combination is a traditional cod with mushy peas and bread and butter on the side with tartare sauce.
