The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI), which is based in Cairo at the FAO Regional Office for the Near East, will hold the Third Meeting of the Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM) in Doha, Qatar, during the period from 20 to 22 October 2009.
The meeting will be attended by experts from the eight RECOFI Member (Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates), in addition to the FAO Secretariat of the Commission. The WGFM is a mechanism to promote more effective regional fisheries cooperation among RECOFI member countries, and importantly to address and resolve fisheries problems of common concern.
The meeting is a follow-up of the Fifth Session of RECOFI that was held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, in May 2009 during which the Commission approved, amongst the other things, the RECOFI Regional Strategy and Priorities for Fisheries Management, and agreed that cooperation among RECOFI Members should be improved for the appraisal of the state of fishery resources and the formulation of scientific advice for management.
The objectives of the workshop are to: (i) review of the outcomes of the Fifth Session of the RECOFI relating to the future work of the Working Group on Fisheries Management; (ii) consider the programme of work and budget for the biennium 2009-2010 in relation to the WGFM; (iii) review the outcomes of the FAO/RECOFI Regional Workshop to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (Muscat, Oman, April 2009) and implications for future work of the WGFM including the establishment of a RECOFI record of fishing violations and the establishment of a cooperative framework for fisheries management in the northern sector of the RECOFI area; (iv) review the results of the FAO study on the fisheries laws of RECOFI Member countries; (v) review of the outcomes of the RECOFI Workshop on Stock Status Reporting (Tehran, Iran, July 2009) and implications for future work of the WGFM; and (vi) consider the formulation of fisheries management measures to be adopted by the RECOFI at its Sixth Session.
RECOFI was established in 1999 to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living marine resources as well as the sustainable development of aquaculture in the region.
