Ecuador Starts Seasonal Red and Blue Crab Fishing Ban

ECUADOR - The second ban of fishing for red and blue crabs started on 15 August and will end on 15 September 2014.

The month long ban is implemented in order to protect the consumer as during this period the crustacean is in the phase of moulting and cannot be eaten.

Crabs secrete calcium oxalate, a chemical that helps to build new shell element, that is harmful to human health.

The Ministerial Agreement 016 published in Official Gazette 284 of March 3, 2004, states that you can not capture, transport, market internally and externally this resource. Those who do not comply with the provisions shall be punished in accordance with the Fisheries Act and Fisheries Development.
