Ecuador Formalises and Regulates Eel Fishing Industry

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP) has formalised and regulated the industrial fishing of eel (Ophichthus Remiger).

The document authorises 10 industrial longline vessels to capture this resource.

Vessels authorized to carry out this activity remain in port during the closure period, 1 to 31 July and from 1 to 31 October of each year, beginning in 2014.

Fishing operations shall be conducted outside of the eight nautical limits and marine protected areas established by the Ministry of Environment.

The Undersecretariat of Fisheries Resources, in order to record biological and fishery information, will provide an observer on board each of the ships that make up the eel fishing fleet.
