Local producers exported 5,800 tonnes of tunas fetching 26 million USD in the first three months of 2008, up 15 percent in volume and 23 percent in value.
The price of frozen tuna currently stands at 6.10 USD per kilo and is forecast to remain unchanged in the year’s second quarter.
Vietnam has also reaped growth in the export of other fishes. The country’s frozen tra catfish, sillago and cuttlefish exports to Australia enjoyed respective increases of 41 percent, 627 percent and 100 percent in the first two months of the year.
Frozen seafood products are particularly popular in Germany , which was Vietnam ’s biggest importer of seafood in January and February. This market saw growth of 67 percent and 50 percent in volume and value, respectively, with frozen fishes making up more than 80 percent of the product demanded.
