Bizerta Sets Up Action Plan To Promote Fish Farming

TUNISIA - Following the implementation of eight new aquaculture projects, the coastal town of Bizerta in Northern Tunisia, recently set up an action plan to promote fish farming.

The plan, whose implementation will run from 2010 to 2014, aims at promoting fish farming in floating cages off the sea, including shellfish, according to Tunisia Online News.

The action plan will provide the creation of a surplus production of 3028 tons per year: 2050 tons of offshore fish farming, 840 tons of farmed shellfish and 138 tons of farmed fish in the fresh waters.

With an annual production of fish from 5,000 to 6,500 tons, 160 tons of mussels and 90 tons of oysters and 200 km of coastline ; Bizerta has five fishing ports, nine shelters for fishing boats, a coastal fishing fleet totaling 1411 units,three lakes covering 12, 000 hectares and three large dams.
