According to reports on NST.Online, the goal is to raise production from 200 metric tonnes to 2,000 metric tonnes a year by the end of this year. TADC executive director Adnan Ghazali, says this is achievable if more entrepreneurs get involved with the lake’s aquaculture programme.
On average, a fish cage can produce about one metric tonne of fish, depending on the fish species. Entrusted by the state government to be the developer for fish farming in Lake Kenyir, TADC is aiming for about 2,000 fish cages by year-end.
The project is geared towards creating new businesses as well as improving the income of the poor, said a statement from the ECER secretariat today.
Adnan said if an entrepreneur is responsible for 10 participants in the programme, with each participant farming 20 fish cages, then the entrepreneur will be in charge of 200 fish cages.
Durng the next three years, TADC has plans for 300 people, including entrepreneurs, to be involved in the Lake Kenyir aquaculture project and through this initiative, it will be able to meet the ECER target to boost fish production up to 6,000 metric tonnes per year in the next three years.
