BFAR 12 Offers Hands-on Training on Marine Cage Production

PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 12 in cooperation with the local government unit of Glan conducted a hands-on training on Marine Cage Farming at Bgy. Lago.

Twenty five participants living near the coastal of a activity joined the training.

"It is good that BFAR have this kind of project, since has the potential for fish cage farming, why not maximize the resources? This will provide alternative livelihood for the people living here," said Ting V. Musa, the Sangguniang Bayan Chairman of the Committee on Environment. Is wife Virgiña Musa, is the Municipal Agriculturist of the overseas the implementation of agriculture and fisheries projects in the municipality.

The beneficiary of this livelihood project, the Nakolel Fisherfolk Association, was given the initial assistance in the form of and supplies, such as PE nets, rope, and frame and technical knowledge of cage construction, management and monitoring. The marine cage will be stocked with Bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) fry locally know as "Talakitok". The fish will be harvest after 4 month.

This project is part of BFAR's huger mitigation campaign on ensuring food security, poverty alleviation and profitability in the region.
