Vietnamese Fisheries Up Export Target To $3.6 billion

VIETNAM - The fisheries sector has set a target of US$3.6 billion from seafood and marine exports this year, an increase of $0.3 billion over last year.

At the yearly conference of the ministry held yesterday to review the sector’s progress last year and outline goals for 2007, Minister for Fisheries Ta Quang Ngoc said to achieve the target, the sector would have to boost growth by 7.02 per cent and produce 3.8 million tonnes of marine products.

As part of a longer strategy, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung asked participants at the conference, including business leaders and staff, to set an export target of US$4.5 billion by 2010.

While focusing on foreign markets, the sector had to actively cater to local markets and double domestic consumption to three million tonnes by 2010.

By meeting these targets, the sector would contribute to the nation’s development and increase the living standards of three million people working in the sector, Hung said.
