Salmonids Economics +2 more

NORWAY The Norwegian Seafood Export Council has released figures showing the value of seafood exports for May totalled NOK4 billion, a six per cent increase compared with May 2010.

This year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian seafood stands at NOK 22 billion, an increase of NOK 2.3 billion or 12 per cent compared to the same period last year. These figures mark new export records for both the month of May and the January-May period.

Director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Export Council, Egil Ove Sundheim, commented: “There is continued strong demand for Norwegian seafood in many markets. The growth in exports this year to date reflects the very good markets at present for Norwegian Salmon and herring and mackerel products.”

Exports of Norwegian salmon

Up to the end of May, exports of Norwegian Salmon this year to date totalled NOK 12.6 billion in value. This is an increase of NOK 1.5 billion or 14 per cent compared to the same period last year.

In May, the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon increased by five per cent compared to May 2010. The average price for whole fresh Norwegian Salmon in May was NOK 39.21, down by NOK 0.73 from May 2010 and NOK 3.54 lower than in the previous month.

Exports of herring and mackerel

In the first five months of the year, exports of herring and mackerel increased in value by NOK 330 million, 20 per cent increase from the same period last year.

The January-May period saw exports of mackerel increase in value by NOK 242 million to a total of NOK 711 million. The increase in the value of herring exports is attributable to the upward trend in export prices, while for mackerel the positive export picture is due to growth in both the price and volume of exports.
