US - The ground has been turned for the provinces first aquaculture field station, to be built in Deep Bay.

“We can’t tell you how excited we are – because field stations have been instrumental in the development of the agriculture industry in this province, and Deep Bay is a landmark,” Don Tillapaugh, director of the Centre for Shellfish Research at Vancouver Island University told ComoxValleyRecord.

According to the news organisation, on Thursday, representatives of the school, shellfish industry and funding partners gathered at the waterfront site to officially launch the project.

The Deep Bay Field Station will feature scientific, environmental, economic and public engagement programming in the 900-square-metre facility.

The goal is to create a centre for innovation to help develop the sustainable aquaculture industry.
