SFF Call For Government-Industry Co-operation

Politics

SCOTLAND - The Scottish Fishermens Federation (SFF) will reinforce the need for close engagement and co-operation between the fishing industry and Scottish Government at the Scottish Skipper Expo in Aberdeen (25 June).

SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong will accompany Scottish Fisheries Minister Richard Lochhead on a tour of the exhibition where he will underline the importance of close stakeholder engagement with the Government.

We are at a crucial time with regards to the future direction and shape of the Scottish fishing industry with the European Commission due to announce its proposals for the new reformed Common Fisheries Policy very shortly, said Mr Armstrong.

The industry is enduring intolerable pressures in the shape of ill-fitting regulations and bureaucratic red tape, ever-increasing restrictions on catching opportunity and spiralling fuel prices."

It is, therefore, more vital than ever that there is close co-operation between the Scottish Government and the Scottish fishing industry in helping ensure that the future framework delivers a sustainable and profitable fishing industry."

We are currently in discussions with the Government on ensuring such closer engagement so that we can build the trust and cooperation that will foster a successful future, Mr Armstrong concluded.
