ICELAND - Approximately 12,500 tonnes of capelin have been frozen at HB Grandis pelagic factory in Vopnafjrdur since the New Year and this is a record figure. This leaves last years record 9,500 tonnes figure far behind.

According to Magnús Róbertsson, factory manager at Vopnafjördur, frozen production has exceeded expectations and the company has been able to maintain practically full production.

Production of frozen capelin roe for the Japanese market is expected to start at or shortly after next weekend, and Magnús Róbertsson predicted that this would start at HB Grandi’s Akranes factory and would then begin at Vopnafjördur.

"The roe content of the capelin looks good at around 21-22 per cent, but the maturity of the roe isn’t at the same stage it was at this time last year," Mr Róbertsson said, adding that last year roe extraction and production started at Akranes on the 26 February.

Last year a record 4000 tonnes of capelin roe were frozen by HB Grandi, and this year’s production is not expected to break last year’s record.
