NZ company plans biggest mussel farm in Australia

AUSTRALIA - New Zealand company Flinders Seafood Holdings Ltd says it plans to make its Wallaroo Blue mussel farm in the Spencer Gulf the biggest in Australia over the next five years.

The business is spending $A4.5 million ($NZ5.42 million) developing its 200ha lease in the Spencer Gulf to supply 2000 tonnes a year of blue mussels to the fresh seafood market.

Company director Bruce Koller told the ABC a major part of the expansion would be marketing mussels to Australian consumers.

"In New Zealand we eat about 2.25kg of mussels per head per year and in Australia it's about one tenth of that," he said.
