The new legislation protects the species in its breeding period, promotes the adoption of best practices in handling and transportation and empowers consumers on final product quality, said Sandra Souza, General Coordination of Spatial Planning and Artisanal Marine (CGPAM), the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Best practices
Earlier this month, the MPA governs the way the land crab must be transported, to reduce mortality in this stage. Thus, consumers can get to market more crabs alive, whole and healthy.
When on the ground, the load must be transported in plastic boxes lined with foam padding soaked in water. When using water transport, cargo should be wrapped in plastic boxes, bags, panniers, pears or accommodations that ensure the survival of the specimens.
