ECUADOR - In response to a study carried out on the pelagic fishing industry, the National Fisheries Institute (INP) has suggested a change to the closed fishing seasons for alewife. These changes will help reduce overfishing of the resource.

INP technicians suggest changing the date of closure to the months of February, March and April, during which there was a higher reproductive activity and spawning.

Other recommendations issued by the INP are to maintain or reduce fishing effort, ie the number of vessels engaged in the extraction of this resource.

Fishing sector representatives recognised the importance of study and the need to evaluate the recommendations issued by the INP. The socioeconomic factors and the impact that suspension of the fishery for three months might have on fishermen also need to be taken into account.
