Maritime and Fisheries Policy to Help Portugal on the Path to Growth

PORTUGAL - EU Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki, has highlighted how ideally placed is Portugal to play a leading role in the implementation of the new Common Fisheries Policy as well as to benefit from the Blue Growth Strategy to ensure growth and jobs.

She further emphasised that Portugal will benefit from more than €7.5 billion funding for fishermen, fish farmers and coastal communities. Also, the Commissioner noted that Portugal has the potential to benefit from the EU's Atlantic Strategy to foster innovation, growth and jobs.

Commissioner Damanaki delivered a keynote address during the "Portugal: Path to growth and jobs" Conference organised in Lisbon on 11 April.

The event focused on the role of the EU's Structural Funds and the opportunities available from EU wide funding programmes in order to in unlock Portugal's potential for growth and jobs.

President Barroso inaugurated the event and Commissioners were also present: Antonio Tajani, Vice-President for industry and entrepreneurship; Androulla Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth; Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy; László Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion; and Dacian Ciolo?, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.
