Nordfish-Foodmark sells a wide range of products under its flagship Polarica brand. These include processed herring, shrimp, caviar and surimi-based products. The Polish company was set up in 1994 and operates a processing facility in Charzyno, in the country’s northern region of Western Pomerania.

In addition to the Polish market, the company exports a signifcant share of its output, the UOKiK said in a statement.

"During the approval procedure, the office performed a market analysis and requested the opinions from the largest customers which purchase the products of the [two companies]," the competition watchdog said.

The amount of the latest acquisition was not disclosed by the fish processors.

Under Polish law, the UOKiK is required to approve all mergers or acquisitions which are performed by companies with aggregate revenues that total €50 million in the Polish market, or €1 billion globally in the preceding year.

In 2003, Nordfish-Foodmark was taken over by Norway’s food company Mills D.A. Prior to the acquisition, the Poland-based processor operated under the name of Nord-Fish s.j.

Based in Poznan, in Poland’s western part, Lisner specialises in processing various herring, salmon, sprat, tuna, hake, mackerel and sardine products. The company says its production facility is HACCP, BRC, GMP and GHP certified, and it is operated by a workforce of more than 1,000 employees. Lisner is part of Luxembourg’s Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller S.e.c.s. In addition to fish processing, the food group is active in other sectors, including dairy and fruit processing.

Charzyno is located slightly more than 460 km from the country’s capital Warsaw.
