Illegal Fishers Arrested in Baras

PHILIPPINES - The Baras Municipal Police arrested 12 illegal fishers along the coastline of Baras town.

According to the police, this is just one of the many arrests and operations conducted by the Philippine National Police agency throughout the province adding that they will continue to intensify operations against illegal fishing to protect marine resources.

The arrested 12 were residents of barangays JM Alberto, Agban and Genitligan, and caught in the act using air compressors as means of catching fish.

The team, led by SPO1 Narciso Ondon, recovered from the suspects six improvised spear guns, 15 improvised flippers, 445 meters of air hose, two compressor engines, two air tanks, two motorised bancas, and 42 kilos of assorted fish.

Pursuant to Municipal Ordinance No. 01-2005 (Fishery Code of Baras) the suspects were released after spending required hours in jail and after paying a fine of P2,500.
