Elaine Bay Aquaculture Cuts Staff

NEW ZEALAND - New Zealand aquaculture company Sealord is to lay off nine staff from its Elaine Bay Aquaculture plant in the Marlborough Sounds.

The announcement of the loss of seven full-time and two part-time workers at the mussel servicing and harvesting company comes almost a week after the company's news that more than 320 of its Nelson-based mussel factory workers were to be laid off, according to reports in the Marlborough Express.

As well as supplying Sealord with mussels, the company also takes on independent contracts from other companies.

Sealord spokeswoman Merrill Coke told the Malborough Express that the restructuring had come after a downturn in independent contracts. It did not mean the company was closing or selling parts of its farm, she said.

Ms Coke said workers affected held jobs in administration and on vessels.
