This is an innovative action to improve the per capita consumption of seafood in Mexico, which for years has been below the international average, Mr Sanchez said at the end of Pescamar 2013, the country's largest seafood exhibition.
He stated the need for a growth in average consumption, especially when the nutrient content for the youth and growing children are taken into consideration.
Mr Sanchez said that one of the strategies of the programme is the implementation of a Value Added Strategic Project for sardine and tilapia production in the first stage, and squid production in the second stage, which will generate new production lines.
Regular consumption of fish and shellfish provides high quality protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, minerals like calcium, iron, iodine, zinc and phosphorus as well as vitamins A, D, E and B, Mr Sanchez said.
Pescamar 2013 (which ran from 26 to 28 June) was organised in an effort to promote the country's various seafoods. Mr Sanches said: "During this three-day exhibition, we told Mexican consumers, domestic buyers and international fisheries and aquaculture industries that the country's seafood is varied, high in quality and of nutritional value."
People were invited to eat fish and other aquacultural products, which are part of the natural wealth Mexico provides to the Pacific coast and the Gulf of Mexico, since some countries have the same products but at much higher prices.
