VIET NAM - Aqua-products exports showed signs of recovery and grew sharply in such markets as US and EU countries with a total export volume and value increased by 20 per cent and 6-8 per cent respectively against the same period in 2008.

Nhan Dan reports that aqua-products exported to China (including Hong Kong) was also seen a fairly good growth, up 17.54 per cent and 19.49 per cent in terms of volume and value.

In August, shrimp (including frozen and processed shrimp) ranked first in export volume (95.4 thousand tonnes), up 4.46 per cent in volume but down 2.21 per cent in value. Tra and basa catfish followed second with export volume of 324.38 thousand tonnes worth US$733.17 million.

The nation’s aqua-products export turnover in August reached US$450 million, an increase of US$50 million compared to the July’s figures, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. However, the total export value of aqua-products in eight months only gained US$2.65 billion, down 8.11 per cent against the same period last year due to the shortage of raw shrimp.
