A maintenance subcontractor at Lerøy Seafood Group`s Laksefjord smolt facility is “unaccounted for” following a fire at the plant yesterday.

The missing person was performing maintenance work at the facility and a statement by the firm, released today, says: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family circle, friends and his colleagues.

Lerøy continue to assist the subcontractor, the police and other public bodies in conducting an enquiry into what has happened. Initially the focus has been to obtain an overview of the situation, and implement mitigation measures.

2.6 million salmon smolts between 50 and 60 grams, which were planned for release in April, have also been lost in the fire.
