The white-footed shrimp from South America, was brought into Vietnam for aquaculture trials in selected localities.

Initial results showed that although the shrimp is highly productive, it is also more susceptible to diseases than local varieties. For example, white-footed shrimp are easily affected by Taura syndrome, a disease easily transmitted to common tiger prawns and other local shrimp stocks.

The common tiger prawn is the main shrimp variety bred in Vietnam's aquaculture farms.
