Vietnam steps up checks for contaminated shrimps - VIETNAM - Vietnam's Department for Food Safety and Inspection of the health ministry has announced that it will step up checks for contaminated shrimps.
The inspections lasting from May 11 to Jul 31 this year, will extend from Ba Ria Vung Tau to Ca Mau provinces in southern Vietnam before the shrimps are sent to food processing plants.
Strict checks and chemical analyses will be carried out to ensure that all shrimps found with contaminants above approved levels are destroyed.
Fines ranging from VND10 to 15 million (US$625 to 940) may be imposed on suppliers who fail the inspections.
Poor quality of shrimp feed or water used for feeding, as well as disease, may lead to contaminated shrimp.
