Viet Nam's tra and basa catfish meet international standards, says seminar

VIETNAM - A seminar on tra and basa catfish quality held in southern An Giang province on June 11 concluded that a programme to apply international standards on aquatic products in Viet Nam has been effective in helping meet the demands of domestic and foreign markets.

Participants included representatives from relevant ministries and agencies, fisheries businesses from Mekong Delta provinces, tra and basa catfish breeders, and delegates from the UK, the US, France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland.

All agreed that the application of international standards on food hygiene was the only way to achieve international integration for aquatic products. The Fisheries Ministry should issue soon a set of general standards to comply with the demands of the various markets.

On June 12, the delegates will visit the tra breeding farms of the An Giang Fisheries Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Agifish), and processing factories for the Agifish and the Viet An Company. Delegates from the US and several of the distributors will visit farms and factories in Can Tho city and Hau Giang province.
