Although Thailand remained the main exporter to the US, the amount of shrimp exported to the US dropped from 61,640 last year to 48,128 over the January to May period this year.
Shrimp exports from Ecuador and Indonesia, which are the next biggest exporters of shrimp to the US, increased however, with the January to May 2012 figures standing at 35,547 and 31,991 tons respectively.
Costa Rica also noted an increase of over 50 per cent, with shrimp exports rising from 14 to 30 tons from 2011 to 2012.
Figures also showed that the UK, which exported no shrimp to the US last year, has now exported one ton over the period.
US Shrimp Imports Increasing from Previous Year
US - US shrimp imports from January to May this year increased to 197,263 tons in comparison to 187,435 over the same period last year, according to the latest figures supplied by NOAA.
