According to FIS, most rankings have not changed, yet general seafood consumption fell for the third consecutive year.
Amounts of shrimp consumed have remained stable and canned tuna has seen a small hike, says FIS.
Consumption of tilapia has been steadily rising since its introduction to the US market in 2002. NFI attributes this to the white fish’s health benefits, affordability and culinary versatility.
The average American’s consumption of shrimp for 2008 is 4.1 lb; 2.7 lb of canned tuna; 1.84 lb of salmon, down from 2.36 lb in 2007; Pollock is 1.34 lb down from 1.73 lb the year before; and tilapia is 1.9 lb, up from 1.14 lb in 2007.
