MEXICO - The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) has announced the start of the 2015 fishing season for different species of tuna in the Pacific Ocean, on Monday 19 January 19.

The season will end on 18 November this year.

Closures were initiated to protect the reproductive periods of populations of different species of tuna and maintain sustainable fisheries that will generate employment opportunities for the benefit of producers in the region.

According to the latest CONAPESCA reports, during 2013 the tuna fishery in Mexico represented a production of 149,475 tonnes, 20 per cent higher than in 2012, of which 79,000 correspond to Sinaloa followed by Colima with 33,000.

The total value of production in 2013, based on preliminary figures, is 1,776 million pesos, an amount 36 per cent higher than that recorded in 2012.
