Traceability of Fish Products to Benefit Spanish Fishermen

SPAIN - The Director General of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Andres Hermida, has highlighted the importance of the traceability of fishery products and the need to promote sustainable fisheries and responsible market inorder to guarantee a fair income for producers and to benefit consumers.

To meet these objectives, Mr Hermida has identified the need to conduct "comprehensive control of all activities covered by the Common Fisheries Policy, including the monitoring of catches from the sea to plate.

This emphasised the role of the Secretariat General of Fisheries in the task of implementing the monitoring of fishing activity.

To ensure traceability of fishery products, Mr Hermida has announced that a draft Royal Decree regulating the first sale and adapting the rules to existing legislation has been developed.

In his speech, the Director General called for increased cooperation and coordination between different administrations and different management Mercas, "to ensure effective and integrated control of these products."
