Tasmanian Firms Aim To Double Salmon Output

TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA - Three aquaculture companies have revealed plans to double their farmed salmon production at Macquarie Harbour on the west coast.

Tassal, Huon Aquaculture and Petuna Seafoods have jointly applied to the State Government to expand their leases by 120 hectares each, reports ABC.

The companies also want to create an aquaculture hub at Strahan where they can share some facilities.

Huon Aquaculture's managing director, Peter Bender, says the companies decided the best approach is to work together on the application.

"If we were all trying to get more area, it would have led to difficulties with the Government deciding who should have got what," he said. "So we decided that rather than being winners and losers we'd all get together and try and ask for the same amount each."
