The announcement was made today by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), following key discussions this week during Seafood Expo North America in Boston. The two SRs encompass squid production in Southeast Asia and South America and the move will unite sectors, simplifying efforts by industry stakeholders to monitor and operate various squid fishery improvement projects around the world.
“Globally, squid fisheries share a lot of challenges,” said Sam Grimley, SFP’s Director of Buyer Engagement Strategic Initiatives, who coordinated the meeting.
An SR is an industry-led body that oversees the progress of fishery improvement projects (FIPs) and/or aquaculture improvement projects (AIPs). SRs are often necessary to manage multiple FIPs and/or AIPs.
The new merged SR will include more than 20 companies. Stefano Pagliai, Director of Procurement at PanaPesca, based in Pembroke, Massachusetts agreed that merging the two SRs will make managing global squid FIPs much easier. “For us, it really makes sense to have the global picture,” he said.
