Staff and transport resources needed to tap fisheries potential

PAKISTAN - Fisheries department is unable to tap the potential in fisheries sector due to lack of facilities including shortage of staff and proper transportation, Fisheries District officer Asif Ali Shah told The Post on Monday.

He said the staff should be provided according to the sanctioned posts given in the present district budget and also nets for netting of fish should also be provided.

"Proper transportation should be provided for carrying out survey of land in Rawalpindi district," he said, adding from 2001 to 2007, the fisheries department constructed mini dams on a total area of 325.2 acres in Rawalpindi district.

He said there was no government vehicle was being provided to visit the fish farms and to visit the office for official meetings. He said the fisheries department needed transport to perform their duties. He said the extension of services in private sector, lease of fishing rights, conservation, management and promotion of fisheries are being carried out by the department.

The training through open training school, issuance of district angling license, local publicity and awareness, enforcement of fisheries enhancement in their respective domains, fish stock replenishment in natural water body, the supervision of food provision and production, distribution and supply programmes at all seed production, aquaculture development activities, collection of statistical data on fish and fisheries are all being by the department, he said.
