SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has succeeded, after an agreement with Portugal, an increase in the quota for anchovy fishing in ICES zone IXa, which includes the Spanish waters between Finisterre and the border with Portugal.

Thus the purse seine fleet in the Gulf of Cadiz, which has 98.86 per cent of the Spanish quota for this species, may have a total of 6,000 tons in 2014 to fish. This fulfills the commitment made by the Ministry earlier this year with representatives of this fleet.

The rest of the Spanish quota is available for the Galician fleet operating in the waters between Finisterre and the border with Portugal.

Since 2014 the share of anchovy is distributed individually among seine vessels in the Gulf of Cadiz. This fee increase will increase industry expectations this season, especially in the summer months, when the activity of the fleet is greater.
