Should trout be sold as salmon?

Chinese authorities have ruled that rainbow trout can now be labelled and sold domestically as salmon.

According to the BBC, the decision follows a report in May by state media outlet CCTV, which revealed that a third of the fish sold as salmon in China was in fact farmed rainbow trout from Qinghai province.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) can now be sold under the same label as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in China

This prompted a backlash from consumers in China, as a result, The China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance has announced that, to standardise the industry, salmon was now considered to be the "umbrella name” for all salmonids.
