Should trout be sold as salmon?

14 August 2018, at 11:29am

Chinese authorities have ruled that rainbow trout can now be labelled and sold domestically as salmon.

According to the BBC, the decision follows a report in May by state media outlet CCTV, which revealed that a third of the fish sold as salmon in China was in fact farmed rainbow trout from Qinghai province.

This prompted a backlash from consumers in China, as a result, The China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance has announced that, to standardise the industry, salmon was now considered to be the "umbrella name” for all salmonids.
