Seafood industry sails into bigger waters

VIET NAM - Vietnam's booming seafood industry earned US$300 million from exports in April. It raised the total seafood export turnover in the first four months of this year to more than US$1 billion - a year-on-year increase of 21%.

However, in spite of the introduction of new processing facilities in the Mekong Delta, April's fishing catch failed to meet demand. Some firms were forced to import raw materials for processing in order to fulfil their contractual responsibilities and this has brought difficulties regarding country of origin specification (Click here for more details - Stiff reminder for firms exporting to the EU).

Minister of Fisheries Ta Quang Ngoc said that a continued shortage of seafood in the first months of the year would be a barrier to the sector’s export growth.
