"A high volume of Norwegian Salmon exports to nearby markets in the EU and Russia, together with an increase in clipfish exports, have contributed to total seafood exports from Norway in May touching the levels we attained in 2011, says Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Norwegian Salmon exports in May unchanged from last year
The value of exports of Norwegian Salmon in May totalled NOK 2.6 billion, unchanged from May last year. This year to date, the value of Norwegian Salmon exports totals NOK 11.5 billion, down by NOK 1.1 billion or 8.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. This decline is due to lower export prices. In May, the average price for fresh whole Norwegian Salmon was NOK 30.15 compared to NOK 39.21 in May 2011. As in the previous month, France and Russia were the biggest importers of Norwegian Salmon.
Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in May increased in value by NOK 41 million to a total of NOK 128 million. For the year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout totals NOK 678 million, up by NOK 162 million compared to the same period in 2011. The biggest importers of Norwegian Fjord Trout are Russia and Japan.
Exports of herring down, mackerel up
Norwegian herring exports fell in value in May by NOK 31 million to a total of NOK 147 million. For the year to date, the value of herring exports totals NOK 1.9 billion, down by NOK 66 million compared to the same period last year. Russia and Germany are the biggest markets for Norwegian herring.
Exports of mackerel in May increased in value by NOK 47 million to a total of NOK 114 million. This year to date, mackerel exports are up in value by NOK 290 million to a total of NOK 995 million. The most important markets for mackerel exports are Russia and China.
Export growth for clipfish, decline for salted fish
Clipfish exports increased in value in May by NOK 94 million to total NOK 262 million. A breakdown of this figure shows that Norwegian Cod clipfish accounted for NOK 190 million and saithe NOK 56 million, with the remainder accounted for by ling, torsk and other groundfish.
May exports of salted fish including fillets fell in value by NOK 25 million to a total of NOK 113 million, of which Norwegian Cod accounted for NOK 108 million.
Fresh and frozen Norwegian Cod exports down
In May, exports of fresh Norwegian Cod including fillets from fishery fell in value by NOK 40 million to a total of NOK 51 million. The value of exports of frozen Norwegian Cod including fillets was also down, falling by NOK 16 million to a total of NOK 108 million.
