The announcement follows the results of the latest monitoring report by the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) which looked at the reproductive process of the fish.
In the case of the Bio Bio Region, which has the largest number of fishermen engaged in the extraction of small pelagic fish, a high percentage of female sardines (58 per cent) and anchovy (95 per cent) are still active (in the spawning stage), which exceeds the recommendations by the Scientific Committee.
The Subpesca representative in the Bio Bio Region, Lilian Troncoso, commented: "The figures do not allow the fishery to reopen. We call the artisanal and industrial sectors to continue to respect the ban and thus ensure good reproductive process."
Meanwhile in the regions of La Araucanía and Los Ríos the fishing of sardine and anchovy remains open.
