Russian seafood ban off

NORWAY - The threatened ban of imports of Norwegian seafood by key customer Russia has been called off.

Russia had threatened to implement new regulations for export certificates by an unreachable deadline of Oct. 1 but an agreement has now been reached.

"This is very good news. The Russian market for Norwegian herring, mackerel and other fish will not be closed after a meeting between the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and Russian veterinary authorities had a positive outcome. Meanwhile we must have new, non-falsifiable export certificates in place by Oct 15," Fisheries Minister Helga Pedersen told Norwegian news agency NTB.

Pedersen said that the agreement did not entail new limitations or approval arrangements for the export of frozen fish.
