Sustainability Economics Politics +4 more

ARGENTINA An overfishing crisis in the Argentine fishing industry is putting hake exports at risk.

A UPI report says that the government ahs now imposed a shutdown on the industry, preventing fishermen leaving port.

The hake catch between January and March was 33.5 per cent down on the same period in 2009, according to official figures.

The report says that the Wildlife Foundation of Argentina has described the situation as the worst in the country’s history brought about by the fishermen catching quantities of juvenile hake.

The foundation said it was concerned that because of the unscrupulous fishign it would take a long time for stocks to recover.

Falling yields have raised concerns the fishing industry could soon be appealing for urgent government help as the problem worsened.

The export situation was made worse because of increase safety demands from the EU on product entering the market.
