Aquafeed Horizons will take place along side Victam 2007, in Utrecht, the Netherlands from May 9-10, 2007 and will provide feed companies and their suppliers with important insights into the needs of aquaculture and the possibilities offered by advances in aquafeed technology and formulation.

Presentations will fall under one of three main themes: Markets and Trends, Feed Processing Technology and Feed Formulation.

Markets and Trends will provide an overview of world and European aquaculture and present insights into hot aquafeed markets, emerging species, farming technologies and market drivers.

This will be an invaluable session for anyone who is eyeing the aquafeed sector speculatively, and those already involved, whether producers or suppliers - or those generally interested in the industry - will find it fascinating, organiser, Suzi Fraser Dominy said. This session will shine a spotlight on the road ahead for aquafeed.

One of the highlights will be a presentation by Cell Aquaculture, a young and truly innovative Australian company that has developed a sophisticated, yet simple and economical land based recirculating aquaculture system that is introducing barramundi to the worlds markets. Cell recently commissioned its first European production facility in the Netherlands and exemplifies the new generation of eco-friendly, global aquafarmers.

With organic production seen as a promising growth niche, it is not surprising that the presentation by Peter Bridson, Aquaculture Programme Manager, Soil Association, Scotland is creating considerable interest. In August 2006, following eight years developing the most rigorous aquaculture standards and assessing every aspect of UK farmed fish production, the Soil Association - the original and one of the best-respected organic standards organisation in the world - gave its full backing to organic aquaculture.

As well as gaining from the invaluable market insights offered in this session, delegates can expect to come away with practical information that can be applied now to their feed production operations.

The Feed Processing Technology session will present the latest concepts in feed processing and new equipment for the production of aquatic feeds, while the Feed Formulation session will focus on new ingredients, formulation concepts and applied nutritional science for aquatic species.

The interaction between ingredients and processing will be a major theme of the technical sessions. Presentations by Fiskeriforskning, AKVAFORSK and industry presenters will examine the impact of ingredients on processing and vice versa.

Fishmeal replacement is of course a major issue for the industry and this session will include updates on some of the newest protein sources available for aquatic diets. Full program details will be published to the conference website very shortly.

Aquafeed Horizons is organised and presented by Aquafeed.com, the aquafeed industry information gateway and Fiskeriforskning, the Norwegian Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture Research. Scientists from Fiskeriforskning Department of Aquafeed Development and Marine Processing, Bergen, Norway will join internationally acclaimed experts from industry to examine the latest concepts in feed development for aquatic species, cutting edge aquafeed technologies and developments in aquaculture markets.

The institute is a leader in aquatic feed research and development and the industry has benefited greatly from their work on marine protein sources and in developing and commercializing larval feed for marine fish for the European market.

Most recently Fiskeriforskning has pioneered the development of feed for sea urchins and king crab, and larval feed for shellfish. This will be the second Aquafeed.com conference to be held in cooperation with Victam. Optimize for Profit held during Victam Asia 2006 in Bangkok in March 2006 drew 150 delegates from throughout the region.

At Victam International 2004, 37% of visitors were from the aquafeed sector; in 2007 the numbers are expected to be even higher. No one should ignore this vibrant and fast moving sector.

Aquafeed Horizons will take place at the Jaarbeurs, Utrecht, the Netherlands, May 9-10, 2007.
