Plans for Maryland Oyster Industry

US - Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley is expected to reveal plans this week to revitalise the states oyster population and industry.

According to a report on Hometown Annapolis, the plans have been attacked by watermen but welcomed by environmentalists.

They are expected to include an expansion of the no-harvest zones, reduce the traditional areas for harvesting but expand oyster farming.

The strategy was first announced in December as a means of tackling the dwindling oyster stocks in Chesapeake Bay.

The plan is also designed to spur growth of the oyster farming, or "aquaculture," industry.

A few years ago, state lawmakers updated Maryland's old oyster farming laws.

The governor’s plan includes more details on aquaculture, such as permitting and reporting requirements.
