Northwest Cantabrian Working Group Agrees Mackerel Quota

SPAIN - The Secretary General of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Carlos Dominguez, met in Madrid, under the Working Group of the Northwestern Cantabrian fishing grounds, with representatives of the regional governments and the industry, to reach an agreement on the fishery management plan.

After two days of negotiations, the start of the season for mackerel was agreed as the 25 February.

The coastal fleet has seen increased quotas for mackerel, horse mackerel, hake and monkfish. These species are the most important, incorporating many workers and fishing vessels. This increase will therefore contribute to the economic stability of coastal communities highly dependent on these species.

During 2013, work will continue in the framework of the Working Group and Northwestern Cantabrian to discuss the sustainable management of this fishery
