The group at the Veterinary Institute, consisting of researchers Helena Hauge, Unni Grimholt and engineer Magne Cut, has developed vaccine prototypes against several fish viruses.
"There are too many diseases and a shortage of vaccines. We thought therefore that new approaches are needed to succeed and had an idea to make "goal-oriented" vaccines for salmon. An important part of this work was about identifying scorecard candidates that can stimulate the immune system of the salmon. We saw gradually that the concept could be expanded to other viruses and other fish species," said Ms Hauge.
"In the future work we hope to show that the target vaccines can help to solve the challenges associated with viral diseases in farmed fish. It is incredibly exciting and inspiring to further develop our idea together with industry partners with expert expertise in vaccine development and commercialization," said Ms Hauge.
