Camiel Derichs, MSC Deputy Director Europe says: “The purpose of the seminar is to create a common understanding about the definition of sustainability in the seafood industry, and to demonstrate the value of sustainability for present and future generations. The target audience is decision makers and leaders in the seafood industry, and associated stakeholders. Given the large influence of procurement decisions of large multi-national retailers, processors and foodservice companies, which increasingly drive a demand for sustainability to core producers, there will be special attention for the strategies of retailers and brands verifying and communicating seafood sustainability.”
Peter Hajipieris, chief technical sustainability and external affairs officer Iglo Foods Group, will chair the seminar. Key speakers include executives of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), who will highlight the clear needs for sustainable fisheries management to feed a growing world population; MSC chief executive Rupert Howes will touch on the value and impacts of credible standards and certification; Hans-Jürgen Matern, head of sustainability and regulatory affairs at Metro Group, who will show what drives and defines sustainability for Metro group, and what the corporate policies imply in practice.
Business cases about practical approaches, costs and benefits, the value of sustainable seafood and the role of communication, will be presented by executives from Heiploeg Group, McDonalds, and Marine Harvest. There will be specific attention for the role of the consumer. Sven Mollekleiv, Executive Vice President of Det Norske Veritas, will close the seminar by placing the seafood industry in a broader context, which will show inspiring examples from other industries.
