Lobster Fishing Season Closes 16 January

ECUADOR - The Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries MAGAP has set the closure season for lobster from 16 January 2013 to 16 June, 2013.

The closure period of six months, is set to maintain the sustainability of the resource. In Ecuador, lobster fishing provides a considerable income for the population, especially the artisanal fisheries.

The Director of Fisheries Management, Mendoza Molke indicated that the ban prohibits lobster harvesting, holding, processing, transportation and marketing of domestic and external resources.

He said those who violate the rules will be punished by a fine of two to ten unified basic remuneration in general and / or imprisonment of 15 to 60 days, according to Article 71 of the Fisheries Act and Fisheries Development.
