Letter of Contempt Over BC Fish Farms

CANADA - More than 500 fishermen have signed an open letter to the federal Minister of Fisheries, calling for immediate new restrictions on B.C.s fish farming industry in the wake of a recent court decision that says Ottawa not Victoria should regulate aquaculture.

Justice Christopher Hinkson of the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that because the federal government has constitutional responsibility for the oceans, it should regulate fish farms, reported the WestCoaster eralier today.

According to the news organisation, the judge’s decision gives Ottawa 12 months to bring in new legislation so that fish farms can be licensed and regulated by the federal Fisheries Department.

The letter, which was written by Vancouver Island biologist Alexandra Morton, a long-time critic of B.C. fish farm practices, calls on the DFO to start applying the federal Fisheries Act on the industry immediately.
