Lack of ice hurts mussel growers

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND - Mild winter weather is causing concern for some mussel growers along P.E.I.'s North Shore, where sea ducks are taking advantage of ice-free waters to eat the shellfish.

The mussels hang on lines below the water's surface and ice usually protects them from ducks.

In some cases, mussel growers have lost 40 to 50 per cent of their crop.

The situation is particularly bad in the Covehead and Rustico areas.
