Joint Initiative to Improve Habitat and Sustainability

CANADA - A Memorandum of Understanding has been agreed by the Canadian Government and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to protect and enhance fish and fish habitat throughout the country.

Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Loyola Hearn said that central and provincial government need to work to gather to achieve their goals for the conservation and protection of fish and fish habitat "It is not something that can be done alone, but by working with our key partners-like the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, we are able to improve conservation and protection while ensuring the efficient review of municipal public works projects and infrastructure developments," she added.

Councillor Gord Steeves, President of FCM said that municipal governments were well placed in conservation and environmental stewardship programs that directly support the principles of sustainable development. "We share the federal government's commitment to protecting Fish habitat and we are eager to work with federal officials to conserve and protect those resources under the direct and indirect influence of municipalities," he added.

Minister Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board and MP for Provencher said that the agreement is another example of how co-operation between groups and agencies across Canada can benefit the whole country.
